How can we encourage independent reading over the summer?

Does Independent Reading in class help increase home and summer reading?

As the previous commentators have made clear, the purpose of Independent Reading in the classroom is to build readers not only in school, but for life.  It is valuable to plan how to extend from Independent Reading in school to home and summer from the start of the school year.  In the clips below, Dr. Gambrell explains summer reading loss, and Dr. C.C. Bates, Director of the Reading Recovery and Early Literacy Training Center for South Carolina, shares the work of Reading Recovery to extend school year Independent Reading into the summer.  The classroom teachers and researchers share practical ideas for home and summer that build from Independent Reading during class time.
