What overall guidelines do you establish for Independent Reading?
Our goal is engaged readers: children who are motivated to read for their own purposes in and out of school. It is critical for children to know what it means to be engaged, and exactly how to use Independent Reading time to enjoy books and practice reading. In the Commentaries below, teachers share how they establish guidelines with the children at the beginning of the year, referring and adding to them often. The Classroom in Action clip below is an excerpt from the Sample Lesson, Early Meaning Making, in which Ms. DuBose reviews the guidelines for IR with the children before they go off to read.
